8 questions for Father Edison Pamintuan

Father Edison Pamintuan

La Salette Father Edison Pamintuan, 36, was born in Santiago City in the Philippines. He has two brothers and a sister. Pamintuan was ordained in 2002 in Santiago City as a member of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette. In 2003, he went to work in the Diocese of San Bernardino in California before coming to Hawaii in July 2005. He was the assistant pastor for Kauai parishes Holy Cross, Kalaheo, and St. Raphael, Koloa, for 3 years before becoming pastor of both in 2008.

1. What is your favorite Bible passage?

Matthew 20: 24-28. Jesus told his disciples that he came “not to be served but to serve.” This passage was actually the theme I chose during my ordination to the priesthood to remind me that my vocation is to be a servant, not master.

2. Who have you admired most in your life?

My late father simply because he manifested to me the call of Jesus to serve and not to be served. My father showed me the real meaning of humble service.

3. What’s the church’s biggest challenge today?

I believe the biggest challenge facing our church today is how to motivate our youth and young adults to participate actively in the life of the church.

4. Do you have any hobbies or hidden talents?

I love playing basketball. If I don’t have any appointments on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons I usually play basketball with friends. Aside from basketball, I love to sing. I don’t know how to play any musical instruments but I have my own “videoke.”

5. What book are you reading now, and what do you think of it so far?

I recently finished reading the book entitled, “Mother Teresa: In My Own Words.” I think the book was easy to read and yet very inspiring knowing that Mother Teresa was a person who tried her very best “to serve and not to be served.” Right now, I am reading the book entitled, “The Joy of Knowing Christ: Meditations on the Gospels” by Pope Benedict XVI.

6. What is your favorite television show?

I have a lot of favorite television shows. I like watching “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” “America’s Most Wanted,” and during the NBA season, I watch NBA games just to name a few.

7. Do you have a favorite sports team?

The Dallas Mavericks. I like them because my favorite player, Dirk Nowitzki, plays for them.

8. Who is your favorite saint?

These past days I am learning more about St. Damien. His example of service to the people of Molokai is a great reminder for me about my own call as a La Salette missionary priest. Damien is now one of my favorite saints.
