Nine children thanked their First Communion teacher Demetria Kuapahi, Father Khanh Pham Nguyen and their parents for preparing them for the Sacrament of the Eucharist. They received Body and Blood for the first time at the 7 a.m. Mass on May 6. They participated in the liturgical celebration as proclaimers of the Word, readers of the intercessory prayers, gift presenters, and in the music ministry, too. They sang their reflective Communion Song in parts with pianist Leka Leaeno. In his homily, Father Khanh spoke of an infant brought to the church to be with the Communicants. The infant’s hands were tightly fisted, but as the child was nurtured with love, the hands loosened, opened up and trusted. For all, hands must be open to accept love and to give love. Congratulations to all the First Communicants. May they be filled with the Holy Spirit and grow in the virtues of kindness, humility, peace, love, wisdom and understanding. Each student received a certificate at the breakfast celebration afterward in the parish hall. Thank you to Robert and Alika Piper for coordinating the breakfast and to all who assisted to make this day a spiritual and a special one. Alleluia! Resurrection of the Lord Parish

One day, you are reciting Our Father. Then, you realize there is a little child inquisitively looking up at you. She says, “Sounds nice. Can you explain to me what you are saying?” You are not sure if you can. You have these precious lines committed to memory forever, but can you define each? Nadine Wheeler, an adult religious education coordinator and a veteran catechist, answering a directive from the pope, started the Bible Basics classes to help answer questions like these. She says, “There is a huge need among adult Catholics to grow in their faith and understanding of the Bible. They may enroll their children in CCD and Catholic schools, but if they really desire to grow spiritually as a whole family, it’s the adults, more than anybody else, who need to continue their journey with faith.” Bible Basics teach understanding of the Bible as a whole, its history, background, the people and culture, and literary styles. According to Nadine, adults should go beyond what was taught in the 8th grade regarding the church and the Bible so as to truly embrace the joys of Christian life. If you are interested in the Bible Basics classes, please feel free to contact Nadine Wheeler. The class is open to ALL adult Catholics! (Reported by Nobuko Fushimi)

The highlights of the trip included visits to a Catholic girls’ orphanage in Saigon and a coed Buddhist orphanage in BinhThuanProvince. Smiles of gratitude greeted the Hawaii students as they sat down and helped the Vietnamese children with art projects. The group gave the children stuffed animals, medical supplies and hygiene items. The students also took the Ho Chi Minh City tour, including visits to the old SouthVietnamesePalace and the WarMuseum, which presented the Vietnamese perspective of what they call the American War. A tour of the Viet Cong’s Cu Chi tunnels also created a great deal of interest. The trip home included a 12-hour layover in Korea, enough time for a historic tour of Seoul.
