KAMUELA | Annunciation Parish
Plans for the parish bazaar, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Aug. 4, on church grounds, are in full swing. Our most recent bazaar was two years ago to help pay for our new church in Kamuela. This year’s event will raise funds to repair damages sustained by our Ascension Church in Puako during last September’s earthquake. Leaks in the ceiling and structural damage to the outer hollow tile have been earmarked for repair. Many church members and non-members have stepped up to head the various committees. Parishioner Toni Palacat will coordinate the many activities. Booths include food, plants, country store, games, rummage, silent auction, crafts, and weekenders. Live entertainment is also being arranged. (Reported by Libby Kaopuiki)
PAPAIKOU | Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish
Our social ministry team, under the leadership of Donna Johnson and Eden Patino has a full calendar of future events. Two inter-island round trip tickets were recently raffled. The winners were Vicki Leite and Kimiko Chinen. The proceeds go toward the team’s participation in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in July. Last year, they won a certificate of achievement for reaching the gold level in contributions of over $5,000. Not to be outdone, the high school youth ministry, under the direction of Inez Johnson and Victor Justo Jr., also has a full schedule planning as the hosting parish for the Big Island Youth Day on May 12. They are also compiling a parish cookbook. They are off and running! (Reported by Pat Phillips)

The grade school will have its annual “Fun Daze” bazaar on March 17. Parishioners are being asked to help either at the event in the booths or in the preparation of various foods prior to the event. Paulette Cardoza, manpower coordinator, is accepting calls at the parish office, Ph. 244-4148. Mr. “LauLau” man Joe Cardoza, assisted by Ernest and Nancy Delima, is also asking for volunteers for the preparation of the laulaus. The laulaus were put together by assembly line on March 15 in the cafeteria. Getting an initiation to the art of laulau making was the new associate pastor, Father Gerald Pleva, who will assist the pastor Marianist Father Ray Malley. One of Father Jerry’s last assignments was in San Antonio, Texas, with the late Father Charles Oyabu. (Reported by Miriam Kahalekai)

Aloha! Not too much to report this week, just the day-to-day stuff which keeps us busy just the same. On average, we are caring for, with food, about 200-250 families a month, which is down by a little more than 100 families. Financial assistance is remaining strong at about $2,000 per month, mostly all going out in the form of rental assistance. You folks never cease to amaze me. In the 10 years that I have been here, not a day or even a few hours go by without one or more of you dropping off a donation of food bags, clothes, etc. 99.9 percent of the stuff you give is very nice indeed. Food awareness weekend is March 24 and 25! We are now supporting the food pantry at St. Anthony Church rather than keep a pantry here. We had only 26 people come here during a 12-month period and many of the cans rusted and food dates expired. Most of the Windward churches now support St. Anthony’s food pantry, which is more centrally located. Its hours are Monday-Friday (except Wednesdays) 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 3-4:30 p.m. If you would like to help St. Anthony’s Easter call for food, take a suggested donation slip from the basket on the church counter. Bring your donation next Sunday and place in the large food baskets. We will deliver it to St. Anthony. Mahalo! (From the parish bulletin)
