KIHEI | St. Theresa Parish
We celebrated a memorial Mass on Jan 19 at 7 p.m. for our former pastor, Father James Berry, who died on Jan. 2. The church was decorated with tropical flowers of many varieties and photo displays of the priest’s life from childhood to present. Before Mass, a combined adult, Life Teen, and Tongan choir led the congregation in many beautiful songs and continued to sing during the entire Mass. The Mass began with the blowing of the conch shell by Loma Falekaono of the Tongan choir. Many priests and deacons from Oahu, Maui and the Big Island were there. Bishop Larry Silva presided, assisted by Deacon Stan Franco. Kathleen Jost and Oli Faiva did the readings, appropriate selections about the just dying young and their devotion to God. Deacon Stan read the Gospel and in his homily commented that parishioners did not have a chance to say goodbye to Father Jim when illness took him away. Leroy and Anita Carrington presented the gifts while Katie Comstock sang a clear and stunning version of Ave Maria. After communion, Roosevelt Golino and Jill Pascua, who have danced at Mass at St. Theresa since they were little children, did a sacred gesture to “On Eagle’s Wings.” All gathered in Stawasz Hall after Mass to break bread and be the family that Father Jim had loved so much. Father Jim was pastor here for only three and a half years, but worked in Hawaii many years and was known throughout the diocese. His kind and gentle ways will not be forgotten. Our jubilee year will be 2009! In 2008, we hope to have a parish mission to prepare us to celebrate what God has done for us together. Before that, various task forces will bring together archives, a re-founders memorial, luau preparations, and the inevitable and much put off final repairs to the parking and maybe even plumbing in the priests’ (Oratory community) house. HONOLULU | Maryknoll High School
A year of independent research by seniors culminated on Senior Project Celebration Day Jan. 26 when three of them presented their final orals for an invited public and the media. Scholarly and creative, a few examples from this year’s projects are “Mission Namibia — one student’s humanitarian mission to Africa,” “Peace Plan for Palestine,” “The Psychology of Videography,” and “The Role of Humor in War.” Like a graduate-degree dissertation process, the students start a year in advance selecting an “essential question” to be answered through research. Writing a paper or developing a product (e.g. video, play, book, performance, etc.) is completed in the students’ senior year. These January oral presentations are a prerequisite for graduation. The top three presentations are the highlight of a daylong celebration that starts with a morning prayer and ends with an all-campus ice cream jamboree. (Reported by Lexie Murray)
