St. Francis Hospice offers inter-faith memorial service

Family members and friends will celebrate the memories of their loved ones who died in the St. Francis Hospice program, at “A Rose for Remembrance,” an inter-faith service at 7 p.m., Nov. 9, at St. Stephen Church, Nuuanu.

The 21st annual event is free and open to the public and is being held in observance of National Hospice/Palliative Care Month.

Catholic, Buddhist and universal faiths will be represented. Leading the memorial will be Oratorian Father George Busto Jr. of St. Francis Hospice; the Rev. Richard Tennes of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii; and the Rev. Lori Wong of Universal Life Church.

Those who come will be able to dedicate a rose in memory of their loved one. Music will be provided by Skylark.

“The memorial services provides a meaningful way to celebrate the memory of our loved ones who have completed life, and to celebrate our love and support for each other,” said Felicia Marquez-Wong, St. Francis Hospice bereavement coordinator, in a news release.

More than 1,000 die annually under the care of the St. Francis Hospice program, either at home or at one of two freestanding hospice facilities.

The memorial service is part of the hospice program’s bereavement services available to family members up to one year after a person’s death that include educational letters, visits, counseling and support groups.
