Hawaii artist Peggy Chun launched her new book “The Watercolor Cat” with a presentation and signing at Barnes and Noble at Ala Moana Center in Honolulu on Oct. 8. “The Watercolor Cat” recounts, through the eyes of her cat, the well-know painter’s life, art, and battle with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, which has completely paralyzed Chun except for her eyes. The book is a combination of Chun’s artwork with text by Shelly Mecum, a teacher at Holy Trinity School in Kuliouou and author of “God’s Photo Album.” Under Chun’s instruction, Holy Trinity students have been painting a watercolor mosaic of Blessed Damien de Veuster and they demonstrated their “painting by direction” at the afternoon book signing. The mosaic project is expected to be done in December with the help of Polish artist Magdalena Hawajska.
