The Big Island Liturgy and Arts Conference 2007 will offer the wide assortment of musical, spiritual and cultural presentations it offers every year. The event, Nov. 1-3, at the Kilauea Military Camp 28 miles south of Hilo, will dip into a familiar pool of talent to offer workshops on musicianship, dance, liturgical planning, creative spirituality and more.
The conference will also feature two keynote addresses and two concerts.
The conference is sponsored by BILAC (Big Island Liturgy and Arts Center) under the directorship of Father George DeCosta, a retired diocesan priest.
The event’s keynote speakers are Tupua Tamasese, a member of the Samoan Parliament and a Pacific studies scholar who has taught in universities in New Zealand, Australia and Samoa, and Bill Huebsch, former president and publisher of Twenty-Third Publications and an authority in church administration and religious education.
Tamasese will address the topic of “pono,” or “righteousness,” in Pacific island cultures. Huebsch will speak on furthering lifelong religious education and faith formation.
Other presenters include Father DeCosta, musicians Marc Anderson, David Haas, Kate Cuddy, Marty Haugen and Bobby Fisher, acupressure specialist Linda Haugen, dancers Ginny Temple and Paul Neves, Hawaiian healer Ikaika Dombrigues, liturgists Glenn Byer and John Buscemi and others. Many of the presenters, 19 in all, are longtime Big Island Liturgy and Arts Conference veterans.
The cost for the conference ranges from $125 to $325, depending on the date of registration and group registrations. Additional fees will be charged for participant substitutions and cancellations. Because the event takes place on the grounds of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, there is also a $10 gate fee. An end-of-conference banquet will cost a participant $25 more.
Participants may also attend and pay for scheduled events and workshops individually. The workshops are $75 each, the concerts are $40, and the keynote speeches are $35.
