This year’s Annual Men’s March Against Violence and rally on Oct. 11 will take place at a new location — the Hawaii state capitol.
The theme for this year is “Dispelling the Myths of Domestic Violence.” The event seeks to show that domestic violence is the entire community’s concern, that it is not limited to physical abuse, and that it does not just happen in underprivileged families.
Its message is that family violence can be ended through intervention, prevention and education
The march is open to all men, those in law enforcement, civic and religious leaders, government officials, businesspersons, social workers, students, educators, and individual citizens.
Marchers will gather at about 11:30 a.m. on the Beretania Street side of the capitol at the Father Damien statue. The march will end with a rally and talks at the opposite side of the building at the Queen Liliuokalani Statue. In the past, the march proceeded from Chinatown, down King Street, to a rally on City Hall grounds.
The march, in its 13th year, is sponsored by Catholic Charities Hawaii, the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline and Kapiolani Community College.
