OBITUARY: BVM Sister Evangelita Hughes
 
BVM Sister Evangelita Hughes taught 7 years on Kauai

Sister Evangelita Hughes, a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary who taught on Kauai for seven years, died Sept. 10 in her community’s Marian Hall in Dubuque, Iowa. She was 87 and a religious sister for 69 years.

Sister Evangelita taught and directed the boys’ choir at Holy Cross School and Parish on Kauai from 1956 to 1963. She also served in Iowa, Illinois and California.

She was born March 31, 1920, and entered the Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as BVM, congregation on Sept. 8, 1938. She professed first vows on March 19, 1941, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1946.

She is survived by her sisters-in-law Alexandra Hughes of Encino, Calif., and Myrna Hughes of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the Sisters of Charity, BVM.

Her funeral was Sept. 14. Memorials may be given to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund, 1100 Carmel Dr., Dubuque, IA 52003.
