Bishop invites all to eucharistic procession for vocations

In a Sept. 5 letter to Hawaii parishes, Bishop Larry Silva invited “all the people of the Diocese of Honolulu” to join a eucharistic adoration and procession for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life at 4 p.m., Oct. 23 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace. The devotions will conclude with the 6 p.m. Mass. Light refreshments will follow. Call the Office of Worship for information, 203-6727.

Serra Club asks parishes to honor their priests on Oct. 29

The Serra Club of Honolulu is urging lay parish leaders to honor their priests on Oct. 29.

The National Federation of Priests’ Councils has designated the last Sunday of October as “Priesthood Sunday.” Although that falls on Oct. 29 this year, parishes may choose any day or occasion to celebrate the contribution of their priests.

The USA Council of Serra International is the yearly sponsor of this event. A special website, www.priestsunday.org, provides information for parishes that want to plan liturgies or activities. The web site also contains reflections, downloadable graphics, guides and posters.

Jack Kampfer, president of Serra Club of Honolulu, said, “We hope every parish does something to express the appreciation of their faith community for the devoted priests who serve them. A celebration is especially relevant in light of the small number of priests in our diocese and the limited number of new vocations. This is an opportunity for each parish to reaffirm the priesthood as central to the life of our church.”

Founded in 1970, the Serra Club of Honolulu is part of a worldwide Catholic organization of lay men and women dedicated to promoting vocations to the priesthood and vowed religious life.

For further information on Serra or “Priesthood Sunday,” call Kampfer at 621-5109, ext. 226.

Maui parish offering family life training in January

One of the 12 proposals for the diocesan Synod 2000 was: “Each parish will establish a Catholic Family Life Ministry to help strengthen, nurture and sustain families and provide direct assistance or referral to support those in crises.” To help the diocese in this goal, St. Theresa Parish, Kihei, is offering family life training, Jan. 13-14, by Judy and George Clark, who have more than 25 years experience in family life ministry. The training is certified by the National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministers. For information, contact Deacon Stan Franco at 1-808-879-0912 or at franco@hgea.net.
