Saint Francis School received $170,478 in grants this year

Saint Francis School in Manoa received $170,478 in grants this past academic year to be used for science laboratories, tuition assistance and classroom equipment for the kindergarten class.

The E.L. Wiegand grant of $156,978 will help renovate the science labs. The E.L. Wiegand Foundation of Reno, Nev., supports educational institutions in the areas of science, business, fine arts, law, medicine and health.

The school also received $11,500 for tuition assistance, benefiting 11 students. The following trusts made the contributions: Frear Eleemosynary Trust; Jhamandus Watumull Fund; G.N. Wilcox Trust; and the Knights of Columbus Bishop Louis Maigret Assembly 1577. The private trusts provide funds for education, literary and social welfare purposes.

The Atherton Family Foundation donated $2,000 for new computers for the kindergarten class. The Atherton Family Foundation is one of Hawaii’s largest grant-making private funds and is dedicated to supporting educational, charitable and religious organizations.

Saint Francis School is grateful for the generous grants received,” said the principal, Sister of St. Francis Joan of Arc Souza. “With this assistance, we will be able to improve our programs and enhance the educational experiences of our students.”

Nestled on 11 acres in Manoa Valley, Saint Francis School provides a “Quality Catholic Education in a Spirit of Joy.” While transitioning into a co-ed academic institution, Saint Francis School continues to uphold high standards to the academic, physical and spiritual development of its students. Saint Francis School, founded in 1924 by the Sisters of Saint Francis, Syracuse, New York, is open to boys and girls in preschool, kindergarten and grades 1 and 6. It is open to girls only in grades 7-12.

Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and the Western Catholic Educational Association, Saint Francis School is one of the top institutions for private education in Hawaii with its caring and well-educated faculty, academically sound curriculum and strong campus ministry.
