A showing of appreciation

Bishop Larry Silva hosted an appreciation reception July 12 at the Halekulani Hotel for donors to the Augustine Educational Foundation, the fund established in 1984 by the late Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario to provide tuition assistance for Hawaii Catholic school students.

Specially acknowledged were the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc., which gave its second $1 million contribution; the First Hawaiian Foundation which donated its second $100,000 grant; Edith Leong, for her latest gift of $20,000; and the Ferrario family for its ongoing support of the Ferrario Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships for children of diocesan employees.

Marianne Ferrario, the sister in law of the late Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario, came from Scranton, Pa., with members of her family to meet some of the students her family’s fund has assisted.

The Augustine Educational Foundation has provided $4.1 million in assistance to 5,550 students since 1984. This fall, 418 students will receive grants totaling $500,000.
