Catholic Women’s Guild Lenten meeting March 17 at Regina Pacis
The Catholic Women’s Guild will have its Lenten meeting on March 17 at the Sacred Hearts Sisters central residence, Regina Pacis. Judicial vicar Father Joseph Grimaldi will preside at the Mass at 10:30 a.m. A short business meeting and light lunch will follow. Guests and nonmembers are welcome. Retired Canadian bishop to give workshop on biblical archetypes
Author and retired Bishop of Victoria, BC, Canada, Remi J. De Roo will give a three-hour presentation with educator and counselor Pearl Gervais on “biblical archetypes and the return to essence” March 24, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at the Spiritual Life Center in the Maile Room at First United Methodist Church, 1020 S. Beretania Street in Honolulu.
The workshop will reflect on coming home to truth and wholeness through the Judeo-Christian biblical tradition and is open to all seekers, spiritual directors, clergy and counselors. The cost is $20. Third Order of Mary hosting day of recollection at Star of the Sea
Third Order of Mary members, the public and friends are invited to attend a day of recollection, Sunday, March 25, in the cafeteria of Star of the Sea Parish, Waialae-Kahala.
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. Blessed Sacrament Father Mark del Rosario will open the day with prayer at 9 a.m., followed by his talk. Mass is at 10:15 a.m. Next is a brown bag lunch, short break and Rosary at noon.
Sacred Hearts Father Clyde Guerreiro will speak at 1 p.m. Stations of the Cross will conclude this prayerful event at 2 p.m.
Jesuit peace activist Father John Dear to speak at Chaminade
The New Mexico-based Jesuit priest and peace activist Father John Dear will speak on violence and non-violence, 5-7 p.m., March 25, in the Mystical Rose Oratory at Chaminade University of Honolulu.
His talk, “Jesus and the Road to Peace: Gospel Non-Violence in a World of Violence,” is being sponsored by Pax Christi Hawaii. He will reflect on Jesus and the pursuit of a new world without war, poverty or nuclear weapons. There will be time after the talk for dialogue.
Father Dear has served as director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the largest interfaith peace group in the United States, coordinated chaplains for the Red Cross in New York after 9/11, and has been arrested more than 75 times in acts of civil disobedience against war and nuclear weapons.
The priest is also an organizer, lecturer, retreat leader, and the author or editor of 25 books on peace and justice, including Living Peace (Doubleday, 2001), Mohandas Gandhi: Essential Writings (Orbis Books, 2002), Mary of Nazareth, Prophet of Peace (Ave Maria Press, 2003), The Questions of Jesus (Doubleday, 2004), You Will Be My Witnesses (Orbis Books, 2006), and most recently, Transfiguration (Doubleday, 2007).
He also writes a weekly column for the National Catholic Reporter.
Father Dear has worked in a refugee camp in El Salvador, a human rights center in the Northern Ireland, and a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C. His peace work also brought him to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Haiti, the Philippines and Iraq.
