A capsule history: Hawaii’s St. Francis Medical Centers
- 1927: St. Francis Hospital opens, May 9.
- 1929: Opens St. Francis School of Nursing.
- 1957: Opens day care center for mentally retarded children.
- 1959: Adds five-story Mother Marianne Wing for out-patient and emergency services, laboratory, X-ray, pharmacy, and pediatrics.
- 1962: Creates hospital-based home care program.
- 1965: Introduces renal dialysis service. Establishes affiliation with University of Hawaii Medical School.
- 1969: Performs state’s first kidney transplant. Institute of Renal Diseases established.
- 1971: Opens Halfway House for Alcoholic Women.
- 1973: Institute of Oncology opens Hawaii’s first cancer rehabilitation program.
- 1975: Maui dialysis facility opens.
- 1976: Opens dialysis facility on Kauai. Opens Neighborhood Health Center for residents of Kalihi-Palama.
- 1978: Performs Hawaii’s first bone marrow transplant. Begins hospice program.
- 1980: Opens St. Francis Medical Office Building.
- 1986: Opens dialysis satellite center in Kona. Dedicates new Kauai dialysis and home care facility in Lihue.
- 1987: Performs first heart transplant in Hawaii.
- 1988: Opens Sister Maureen Keleher Center, the state’s first free-standing inpatient facility for the terminally ill. Opens the Maui Kidney Dialysis Center.
- 1989: Establishes Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
- 1990: St. Francis Medical Center-West opens.
- 1993: Performs Hawaii’s first liver transplant. Performs Hawaii’s first pancreas transplant.
- 2000: Opens Molokai dialysis facility.
- 2001: Initiates home dialysis telemedicine program.
- 2005: Announces intention to sell St. Francis Medical Center and St. Francis Medical Center-West to Cardiovascular Hospitals of America (CHA) and a group of local physicians.
- 2007: On Jan. 14, ownership of the two medical centers is transferred to Hawaii Medical Center LLC. The hospitals are renamed Hawaii Medical Center East and Hawaii Medical Center West.
