Akeo funeral is Feb. 14 at St. John Vianney Minimize
Akeo funeral is Feb. 14 at St. John Vianney

The funeral for Barbara Akeo, parish administrator for St. John Vianney Parish and long-time diocesan organizer and volunteer, is Feb. 14, at St. John Vianney Parish in Kailua. Visitation is at 5 p.m. The funeral Mass is at 7 p.m.

Akeo died unexpectedly following surgery on Jan. 31 at Castle Memorial Medical Center. She would have been 64 on Feb. 11.

Akeo was hired by St. John Vianney Parish in 1986 as a receptionist and before long was promoted to parish administrator when the priest staff was trimmed.

According to pastor Father Thomas Gross, she handled finances, facility management, the functioning of the parish offices, and just about everything else. “She was always ready to help in any function,” he said.

Akeo’s ministry of choice, Father Gross said, was bereavement — handling all the funeral arrangements for parish families.

Akeo was a member on nearly every committee that planned large diocesan events including the annual Island Treasures celebration honoring parish volunteers.

She is survived by her husband Paul Akeo, sons Paul “Chuck” Jr. and Dale, daughter Mikiaala Akeo Nelson and six grandchildren.

Condolences may be sent to: Paul Akeo and Family, 435 Auwina Place, Kailua, HI 96734.
