Catholic Charities to mark 60th anniversary

At its annual meeting on Feb. 9, Catholic Charities Hawaii will mark the 60th anniversary of the arrival of three Maryknoll Sisters who came from New York in 1947 to establish the agency at the request of the Bishop of Honolulu.

Catholic Charities will also install the officers of its board of directors and recognize an exemplary community partner and a volunteer at the luncheon meeting, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki.

In 1947, Bishop James Sweeney invited experienced social workers Sister Victoria Francis Larmour, Sister Mary Janet McConnell and Sister Ramona Maria Tombo to Hawaii to establish a social service agency to serve the needs of island families and children.

More than 40 Maryknoll Sisters have worked for Catholic Charities since then. Today the agency employs nearly 350 who serve 27,000 people a year statewide through over 30 programs.

The 2007 board officers to be installed are chairman Rix Maurer III, vice-chairman Les Correa, treasurer Gregg Robertson and secretary Mary Fastenau. Maurer is vice president of finance, treasurer, and chief financial officer of The Queen’s Medical Center.

Catholic Charities will honor Resurrection of the Lord Parish in Waipio with the Partners in Mission Award.

Marianita Lopez will receive the agency’s 2007 Ulu Award in recognition for her contributions to the organization. Lopez has been vice chairwoman of the board of directors, and chairwoman of the program board and the former immigrant services board.

The annual meeting is open to the public. Lunch is $25 per person. Call 546-2277 by Jan. 26 for reservations.
