Knapp, Yap in cathedral carols concert

Actor Terence Knapp and maestro Donald Yap, under the patronage of Bishop Larry Silva will present, “A Festival of Carols,” 50 minutes of traditional Christmas songs in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, 7 p.m., Dec. 15.

Knapp, known as “Hawaii’s adopted world class actor” and for his award-winning portrayal of Blessed Damien, said he will open the evening with the world’s “most popular” Christmas carol, “Adeste Fideles” and close with the second most popular, “Silent Night.”

The songs in between, Knapp said, will include the “Coventry Carol,” “Away in the Manger,” “We Three Kings,” and “every single verse” of “Good King Wenceslas” among other favorites.

Lyric sheets will be handed out for audience participation.

Knapp is a decorated graduate of England’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art who, in the early 1960s, was invited by Sir Laurence Olivier to be a founding member of the Royal National Theatre.

Yap, a Punahou graduate who attended the Eastman School of Music and Julliard, is a distinguished conductor of classical music and musical theater, as well as a piano master who has accompanied celebrated vocal performers.

The concert is free and open to the public. A calabash will be passed to collect funds for the cathedral restoration fund.
