Vietnamese Catholic Community Bible and catechism students hold hands during the Our Father at the Vietnamese Holy Martyrs Mass on Nov. 26. The 117 martyrs, who were canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II, died during persecution of Christians in Vietnam between 1625 and 1886.

Bishop Larry Silva incenses a shrine to the Vietnamese Holy Martyrs at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu. The bishop presided at the 2 p.m. Mass, which was celebrated in both English and Vietnamese.

Vietnamese representatives wearing traditional clothing process from the martyrs’ shrine after incensing it. The Vietnamese martyrs included Vietnamese and foreign missionaries, religious and lay people.
