If you want to learn how to turn your faith into worthwhile political action, the diocese wants to help.
The Hawaii Catholic Conference and the Office for Social Ministry are sponsoring five three-hour workshops on four islands, from December through February, to show residents how to bring Catholic social teaching to the governmental legislative process.
The Hawaii Catholic Conference is the public policy arm of the Diocese of Honolulu.
The workshops, which are open to anyone, will teach participants how Catholic social teaching can be a foundation for ministry and evangelization, and will examine practical and realistic ways to be an effective voice at the state legislature.
Here are the dates, times and locations of the workshops:
Saturday, Dec. 16, 9 a.m.-noon, St. Catherine, Kapaa, Kauai
Saturday, Jan. 6, 9 a.m.-noon, St. Joseph, Hilo, Big Island
Thursday, Jan. 11, 6-9 p.m., St. Stephen Diocesan Center, Oahu
Saturday, Jan. 13, 9 a.m.-noon, St. Michael Church, Kona, Big Island
Saturday, Feb. 10, 9 a.m.-noon, Christ the King Church, Kahului, Maui
Workshop speakers include Carol Ignacio, Kelly Rosati and Walter Yoshimitsu.
Ignacio, the director of the Office for Social Ministry, will talk on Catholic social teaching, which applies the Gospel to society by defending human life and dignity and advocating on behalf of the poor, sick and disconnected.
Yoshimitsu, the director of the Hawaii Catholic Conference, and Rosati, its spokeswoman at the state legislature, will both address the topic “Legislative Advocacy/Grassroots Organization,” demonstrating how to set up a legislation agenda and establish priorities for action to be most effective.
The cost to attend is $5 per person.
