Chaminade University of Honolulu’s extraordinary outpouring of community service during its golden anniversary year has earned it a place on President George W. Bush’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
To mark its 50th anniversary year, September 2005 to September 2006, Chaminade’s staff, faculty, alumni and friends set out to accumulate more than 90,000 hours of community service, nearly doubling its anniversary project’s goal to 50,000 hours.
As a result, the Corporation for National and Community Service selected the university as a president’s Higher Education Community Service Award finalist for excellence in general community service. Chaminade was recognized for its outstanding work in exemplary volunteer opportunities, efforts specific to Hurricane Katrina, and its commitment to service and volunteerism.
Chaminade recorded more than 70,000 hours of community service and was joined by its sister Marianist university St. Mary’s in San Antonio, which added 20,000 hours. Many of those hours were served in hurricane relief and fund-raising efforts.
The honor roll is co-sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.
