Two Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM Sisters) who are former educators in the Honolulu diocese will each celebrate 75 years in religious life this fall.
They are Sister Charlotte Ann Esch and Sister Eileen Gallen who taught in Kauai Catholic Schools in the 1950s and 1960s.
Both sisters entered the BVM congregation on Sept. 8, 1935. They professed first vows on March 19, 1938, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1943.
Born in Winfield, Kan., Sister Charlotte Ann taught on Kauai at Holy Cross School in Kalaheo from 1955 to 1960 and at St. Catherine School in Kapaa from 1960 to 1963. She went on to teach in California, Montana and Nebraska. Sister Charlotte also served in parish ministry and volunteer work in San Francisco
Sister Eileen is a San Francisco native who taught at St. Catherine on Kauai from 1949 to 1956. She also taught or served as a principal in Chicago, in Iowa, California, Kansas and Arizona.
The two Hawaii vets will be among seven diamond BVM jubilarians gathering in the Mount Carmel Motherhouse Chapel in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sept. 12 for a liturgy of thanksgiving.
