Louisiana Bishop main speaker at 2006 Charismatic conference

Bishop Sam Jacobs of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux in Louisiana is the main speaker at the 2006 Hawaii Catholic Charismatic Conference at St. Philomena Church in Salt Lake, Aug. 11-13. The bishop will speak four times over the course of the weekend and preside at the final Sunday liturgy.

The convention begins with registration at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, in the church, followed by a welcoming address and testimony by Bishop Jacobs.

Saturday will have three sessions — morning, afternoon and evening — each beginning with “praise and worship” followed by a talk. The bishop will speak at the morning and evening sessions. A local priest will address the convention in the afternoon.

The convention will also offer a Life in the Spirit seminar presented by Tom Fragas on Saturday afternoon in the church.

Sunday morning begins with praise and worship for a half hour followed by Bishop Jacobs. Mass is at 1 p.m.

Bishop Jacobs has been bishop of Houma-Thibodaux since 2003. Before that he was Bishop of Alexandria, Louisiana, from 1989 to 2003. He has served in several national leadership roles in the Charismatic Renewal movement in the United States.

The registration fee is $25 per person, $45 for two. The fee for priests, religious and youth 18 and under is $10 for the entire conference. No registration is needed for the Sunday Mass.

Spiritual Life Center, Sacred Heart Parish host Jesuit speaker

The Spiritual Life Center and Sacred Heart Parish is sponsoring a retreat by retreat master and spiritual director Jesuit Father Philip Chircop entitled “Exquisite Risk: Awakening to Grace,” Friday, July 21, 7-9:30 p.m., and Saturday, July 22, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., in the Mystical Rose Oratory on the campus of Chaminade University of Honolulu.

A Jesuit for 17 years, the Malta-born Father Chircop has a master’s degree in pastoral theology and communication from the University of Malta and a master’s degree in spirituality from Centre Sevres-Paris.

Hurry, hurry, only 163 more shopping days until Christmas

Avoid the last minute rush and get your holiday shopping done early at St. Francis Medical Center’s Christmas in July Craft, Bake and Gift Fair, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m., July 21, in the medical center’s Sullivan Courtyard and Mother Marianne Lobby at 2230 Liliha Street. Parking will not be validated.

The event will feature a wide assortment of wares, including jewelry (14K, sterling silver, Hawaiian, crystal, beaded and vintage), fabric creations, hand-woven baskets, hand-painted wooden ornaments, Kalaupapa prints and cards, lauhala gift baskets, ukuleles, baked goods and preserves.

The fair will also have drawings for free gifts with a purchase from participating vendors. Vendors will donate a portion of their proceeds to St. Francis Medical Center.

Hospice sponsoring discussion on Samoan perspective on dying

St. Francis Hospice will present a free half-day discussion on the Samoan cultural perspective on death and dying, Friday, July 28, at Borthwick Mortuary in downtown Honolulu.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by presentations by a panel from 9 a.m. to noon.

The presentation will give the audience an explanation of Samoan cultural and spiritual practices regarding death and dying, a history of Samoa, and an overview of Samoan values.

Participating in the panel discussion will be Rev. Fuamila Soa Jr. of Windward Samoan Congregational Christian Church; Mataafa Fono Mataafa, MSW, LSW, social worker and a member of the Royal Council of Samoan Chiefs in Hawaii; and Merina Sapolu, a health educator with Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services.

Tusitala F. Toomata-Mayer, RN, MSN, of St. Francis’ Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program, is the panel’s moderator.

YLI’s Ana Malia Institute marking 53rd anniversary at Pah-Ke’s

The Ana Malia Institute No. 208 of the Young Ladies Institute will celebrate its 53rd anniversary on Saturday, July 29, at Pah-ke’s Chinese Restaurant in Kaneohe from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $11. The deadline for reservations with Diane Kuga is July 24.

Maxine Pollock to offer half-day reflection on discernment

Maxine Pollock of Scrub Bucket Gospel Ministries will present the four-hour seminar, “Can You Hear Me Now? A Look at Discernment,” 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 5, at St. Stephen Diocesan Center. The event is free, but a free will offering will be accepted. Maxine Pollock is a long-time lay teacher and director of religious education in Hawaii. St Francis Medical Center tailors health fair for clergy, religious

St Francis Medical Center has tailored a health fair especially for Hawaii’s priests, religious and deacons and wives. The four-hour event, 4-8 p.m., Aug. 31, at the medical center’s Weinberg Outpatient Building, will feature dinner, health screenings, exhibits, speakers, prizes and more. Bishop Larry Silva will be there.

The Taking Control of Your Health Fair will offer medical screenings and tests for body fat, blood pressure, hearing, respiratory and skin cancer. It will also give information on advance directives and offer medication reviews.

Massage and healing touch will also be offered.

Dress for the evening is casual. Bring medical insurance cards and, if you want a pharmacist to review your medications, all your prescription and non-prescription drugs and supplements in a brown bag.

Registration fee is $20 by Aug. 18 and $25 at the door. Parking will be validated.
