Mondoy does Mozart with Oahu Chamber Orchestra
Well-known island composer, arranger and liturgical musician Robert Mondoy will perform on the piano with the 36-member Oahu Chamber Orchestra in an all-Mozart concert, 7 p.m., Jan. 26, in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu. Admission is free.
The program includes the Piano Concerto No. 20 in Dm, the Don Giovanni Overture and the Symphony No. 31 in D, the “Paris Symphony.”
The Oahu Chamber Orchestra, under the conductorship of Ron Hirai, has frequently performed in the cathedral.
Robert M. Mondoy, 58, grew up on Molokai where his mother first taught him to play the piano at age seven. Years of music scholarship included many youthful public performances and a radio broadcast performance on Ben Hyams’ “Young Hawaii Musician.”
He has a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the University of Hawaii in Manoa and a master’s in music theory and composition from San Francisco State University.
A piano instructor himself, Mondoy has directed the music ministry at St. John Vianney Parish in Kailua for 30 years. He is also the music consultant to the Diocese of Honolulu.
In 2006, he was recognized by the Congress of Visayan Societies for his contributions to the community-at-large in art and entertainment. A frequent concerto artist performing with local community orchestras, Mondoy is a prolific composer of secular and religious compositions that incorporate Hawaii’s ethnic musical genres.
