Catholic Charities honors outstanding volunteer, partners in mission

Catholic Charities Hawaii presented is annual awards for an outstanding volunteer and groups that support its mission, Feb. 18, at its annual meeting luncheon at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki.

Receiving the Ulu Award for her volunteer work with the agency was Rose Domondon. Catholic Charities also gave Partners in Mission Awards to Hawaii Catholic Schools, The Pearson Foundation and Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa Parish.

Domondon has been a volunteer and supporter of Catholic Charities for more than 20 years. She has served on the board of trustees, the board of directors, and has been a member of many committees, including the parish relations committee, the Catholic Identity and Mission Advisory Committee and Friends of Catholic Charities.

She has helped plan the agency’s yearly Golf Classic fundraiser for many years and is the co-chairwoman of Island Treasures, an annual celebration of parish and lay organization volunteers sponsored by Catholic Charities.

Hawaii Catholic Schools has held Catholic Charities fairs on several school campuses, conducted drives for residents of its transitional housing program and Mary Jane Program for unwed mothers, and participated in the agency’s Try Wait! abstinence sex education program.

Hawaii Catholic Schools has also collaborated with Catholic Charities to provide counseling and presentations through its mental health professionals and agencies for students with special educational, behavioral and mental health needs.

The Pearson Foundation offers confidential counseling and free pregnancy tests to girls and women, plus support through pregnancy, including a temporary home if needed. The foundation has also been a provider of sex abstinence education in Hawaii and assisted Catholic Charities when it applied for a federal grant to start a statewide abstinence education program.

The Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa has provided office space to Catholic Charities for a nominal fee for more than 20 years. The parish property houses Catholic Charities immigrant programs, the refugee reception and placement program and a service unit for seniors.

Every month St. Theresa holds a food drive for the needy and with additional collections for Thanksgiving and Easter. The parish school was one of the first to participate in Catholic Charities sexual abstinence education program.

Catholic Charities was established in Hawaii in 1947. Last year, it served nearly 25,000 people.
