Young Ladies Institute schedule retreat, Easter sales this month
Members of the Young Ladies Institute, District 22, will be on retreat, Saturday, March 19, 9 a.m.-noon, in the home of Sylvia Waiwaiole, 644 Keolu Drive, Kailua. Brother Jonah Noa will speak on the rosary. Guests are welcome. Bring a brown bag lunch. Refreshments and dessert will be provided.
The Young Ladies Institutes, Ana Malia #208 (Kaneohe) and Kailua # 213 will hold their Easter basket and baked good sales on Saturday, March 26. The Kailua sale is in St. Anthony Church Hall, 148 Makawao Street, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Reservations are requested if you plan to get the huge 5-6 pound roast chicken with stuffing, dressing and potatoes. KINE 105 radio luau to benefit Charities’ Lanakila Senior Center
Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, a program of Catholic Charities Hawaii, is again the beneficiary of the Great Hawaiian KINE 105 Radio Luau, Saturday, March 19, at the Blaisdell Center Arena. The program begins at 5 p.m., and the luau buffet at 5:45 p.m.
The event will include an all-you-can-eat Hawaiian luau buffet and entertainment by Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, Olomana, Na Palapalai, Robi Kahakalau, Sean Naauao, Frank DeLima, and others.
The cost for general admission is $50, or $70 for a VIP ticket, which offers seating in the three front rows, a flower lei and a gift.

Marianist Center sponsoring workshop compassion fatigue
The Marianist Center of Hawaii is sponsoring a workshop on “ compassion fatigue and burnout” by well-known psychologist and expert in the area of post-traumatic stress Dr. Robert Grant, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., April 16, in the Mystical Rose Oratory on the campus of Chaminade University and Saint Louis School.
Dr. Grant returns to the islands to help those who work in religious ministry or mental health professions deal with the emotional stress and strain that comes from their labors. He will demonstrate ways to maintain mental health and renew psychic energy in times of ever increasing demands.
Dr. Grant has worked extensively with both the perpetrators and victims of abuse and has written several books on the topic.
The program is $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and includes coffee, tea and light refreshments. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian box lunches will be provided at no extra cost for those who register by April 11. There is no fee for students, faculty and staff of Chaminade and Saint Louis, but advanced registration is required for the free lunch.

Talk to address ways of reaching lapsed, non-practicing Catholics
The Charismatic Prayer Group of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Honolulu will sponsor a talk by Steve Odo, head of the Diocesan Ministry for Welcoming Home Fallen-away Catholics, Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m., at Blessed Sacrament Church. Odo’ s topic, “ How to Evangelize Without Chasing Away People,” will suggest ways to invite relatives or friends to church or prayer group. He will also offer ideas for helping your parish grow and reaching the unchurched.
Divine Mercy novena, Mass to be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament
Blessed Sacrament Church will host a nine-day Divine Mercy novena from 2:45 p.m., Good Friday, March 25, to 2:30 p.m., April 3, Mercy Sunday. Mass each day will be celebrated by Sacred Hearts Father Stephen Van den Eynde.
The Divine Mercy devotions are based on the diaries of Saint Faustina Kowalska of Poland who died in 1938. At her canonization, Pope John Paul II declared the second Sunday of Easter “Divine Mercy Sunday.”
A Mercy Sunday celebration will begin with the recitation of the Luminous Mysteries followed by Mass at 3 p.m. celebrated by Father Henry Sabog. Participants are asked to receive the sacrament of reconciliation eight days before Mercy Sunday, perform corporal works of mercy, recite the Spiritual Divine Mercy Prayers and pray a novena of chaplets. Chaminade University to present play Godspell ‘ Hawaiian-style’
The Performing Arts Program at Chaminade University of Honolulu will present a Hawaiian-style version of John Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz’ s Godspell at the campus Mamiya Theater, April 7, 8, and 9 at 7:30 p.m., and April 10, at 4 p.m.
Chaminade’ s version of the 30-year-old off-Broadway musical based on the gospel of Saint Matthew will have all the familiar songs, including “ Day by Day” and “ All Good Gifts,” but will feature Jesus as a lifeguard with his disciples called from among surfers, skateboarders, beach boys, the homeless and tourists. Where better to post rescue efforts in Hawaii but at the beach?
Marianist Brother Gary E. Morris, associate professor of theater, will direct. Dr. Tim Carney, associate professor of music and director of Hawaii Vocal Arts Ensemble, is the musical director. Brad Powell is the choreographer.
The Chaminade production is a collaborative effort of Chaminade students, other college student actors and members of local community theater groups. Tickets are $10 for general seating and $5 for seniors, students and children.
