Entertainment, food, cultural displays and genealogy consultations will be among the many offerings at the Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage’s 31st “Festa,” 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sept. 19, at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park.
“Festa” is the Portuguese word for “festival.”
Comedian Frank De Lima will headline the local entertainment. Festa-goers will also see arts and crafts for sale, children’s activities and mechanical bull-riding.
The abundant Portuguese food selections will include malassadas, Portuguese bean soup, vinha d’alhos pork, cod fish stew and — a growing Festa favorite — Portuguese sausage hot dogs on sweetbread buns!
A $3 donation per person will be welcomed at the door. For more information, call the Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage at (808) 845-1616.
The council has had a festa nearly every year since the first one in 1978. Funds generated at festa events support the many programs and activities of the council and its member organizations across the state, such as genealogy workshops, dance classes, cooking shows, language instruction and more.
Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage was chartered in 1977 to preserve and perpetuate the heritage and culture of the Portuguese in Hawaii. The council is an umbrella organization for a dozen different organizations statewide. Portuguese civic, cultural and business groups throughout Hawaii are each represented by a delegate who serves on the council’s board of directors.
The organization is supported by grants from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and through appropriations from the Hawaii State Legislature.
