The example of Diotrephes

3 John 1:9 seems to apply to Notre Dame. “I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who love to dominate, does not acknowledge us.” John does not deny Diotrephes’ place as leader but indicates that his ambition may have caused him to disregard his (John’s) letter and influence. The same appears true of Father Jenkins. The U.S. bishops recognize him as leader of Notre Dame, yet Father Jenkins in return has disregarded the rulings of the bishops. Very sad!

Adrian Akau, Pahala, Hawaii

Ashamed of statistic

You probably already read the good news that a recent Gallup survey showed that, for the first time, more than 50 percent of the people identified themselves as pro-life. In the details you will find some shocking news; only 52 percent of Catholics identified themselves as pro-life while 59 percent of Protestants did so. We are not getting the word out to our congregations. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

Jim O’Brien, Lahaina, Maui
