BVM Sister Ann Elizabeth Phelps taught on Kauai for nine years

Former Hawaii educator Sister of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ann Elizabeth Phelps died on Feb. 3 at Marian Hall, Dubuque, Iowa. She was 92. She entered the BVM congregation 75 years ago this year.

Sister Ann Elizabeth was born March 12, 1912 in Silvis, Ill., to James and Elizabeth Yocks Phelps. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy, Davenport, before entering the BVM congregation on Sept. 8, 1930. She professed first vows on March 19, 1933 and final vows on Aug. 15, 1938.

She taught music and second grade at St. Catherine, Kauai, from 1946-55. She also taught in Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota, and California.

She is survived by four half-sisters and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 74 years.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund.

Her funeral was Feb. 8. She was buried in Mount Carmel cemetery.
