Clergy, religious and notable laity who went before us in 2008

Here is a list of priests, sisters, brothers, deacons and other notable Catholics with an island connection who died in 2008. They are listed in alphabetical order along with highlights from their lives.

n   Marianist Father John Francis Bolin, former vicar general and Marianist administrator

n   Peggy Chun, local Catholic artist and ALS sufferer, who recently collaborated with Holy Trinity School students to create a mosaic of Blessed Damien de Veuster

n   Sacred Hearts Father Gaston Diels, Belgian missionary in Hawaii since 1951 as parish priest and member of congregation leadership team

n   Marianist Brother Elmer Dunsky, led Chaminade University of Honolulu’s education department

n   Sacred Hearts Father Nobincio “Nobby” Fernandez, military chaplain and pastor for 12 years at St. Francis Parish, Kalaupapa

n   Sister of St. Francis Gretchen Gilroy, former chief executive officer of St. Francis Medical Center

n   Paul Harada, Kalaupapa patient and resident for 62 years, police officer and sheriff, and pillar of the peninsula’s Catholic community

n   Sacred Hearts Father Joseph Hendriks, Belgian who served most of his 60 years of priesthood in Hawaii, including at Kalaupapa

n   Maryknoll Sister Virginia Therese Johnson, spent 10 years in Hawaii as a teacher and principal of Maryknoll School

n   Maryknoll Sister Mary Kane, spent five years doing social work in Hawaii

n   Marilynn Aulani Kauhane, who was forced to step down as principal of Cathedral Catholic Academy because of illness

n   Maryknoll Father Thomas Killackey, last veteran Maryknoll pastor to leave Hawaii after almost 50 years in islands

n   John Keola Lake, Chaminade University of Honolulu’s kumu-in-residence and Catholic Marianist educator

n   Maryknoll Sister Grace Dorothy Lim, influential force in the diocese over the past three decades, first diocesan chancellor of Filipino ancestry in U.S.

n   Richard Marks, Kalaupapa patient, historian and devoted Catholic, who convinced the National Park Service to come to Kalaupapa

n   Sacred Hearts Father Paul McLeod, Hawaii priest for 24 years

n   Thomas Papandrew, as Director of Planning, was a pivotal figure in the current diocesan strategic planning process

n   Sacred Hearts Sister Stephanie DeCosta Pavao, taught piano at Sacred Hearts Academy for forty years

n   Marianist Father Jack Rielly, teacher, pastor and lay spiritual advisor

n   Sacred Hearts Father Francis Schellemans, Belgian priest who served in Hawaii parishes and as a Army chaplain

n   Deacon Frank Singson, served for 13 years at Christ the King Parish in Kahului, Maui

n   Maryknoll Father Elias Joseph Tederous, spent most of his 52 years of priesthood serving rural parishes on the Big Island and Waianae Coast

n   Marianist Brother Joseph Wasielewski, a former teacher and coach at Cathedral School
