Jerry Coniker, the co-founder and president of the Apostolate for Family Consecration and a consultor for the Pontifical Council for Families, will give a talk and a workshop at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Pearl City later this month.
He will speak on the “Mission of the Apostolate for Family Consecration” at 7 p.m. on Jan. 27 and give a Lay Ecclesial Team workshop at 9 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 29.
Pope John Paul II, last year, named Coniker as a consultor of the Pontifical Council for the Family.
Coniker and his late wife Gwen, the parents of 13 children and the grandparents of more than 50, founded the Apostolate for Family Consecration in 1975.
The apostolate is an international lay association that seeks to nourish families in the parish setting.
Its largest center is comprised of 950 acres in Bloomingdale, Ohio. The association has international centers in Manila, Belgium, Mexico and one starting in Nigeria. Members also work in Canada, Pakistan, and Russia and throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Its two American outreaches are Catholic Familyland and the 24-hour Familyland Television Network, both located in Bloomingdale.
Each year, Catholic Familyland hosts several events for families to learn about their faith, be nourished in the sacraments and spend time in a vacation setting.
Familyland Television Network, available through Sky Angel Satellite and some cable providers, offers family-friendly entertainment and spiritual programming.
The Apostolate for Family Consecration has worked with more than 500 prominent Catholic leaders included Blessed Teresa of Calcutta and Cardinal Francis Arinze, prefect of the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship.
In 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed the Conikers as one of 20 member couples of the Pontifical Council for the Family. After Gwen died in 2002, Jerry was appointed one of six council consultors.
