The 58th Diocesan Congress of Filipino Catholic Clubs (DCFCC) convention in Maui concluded on Nov. 9, with the acclaimed Msgr. Osmundo Calip Founder’s Award bestowed on Maui DCFCC president Doris Saribay, a woman who has shown sterling service to the Filipino Catholic movement over the years through her expertise, strength and camaraderie.
More than 300 delegates attended the convention at the Maui Beach Hotel. Awarded the Father Ernest Claes (1st spiritual director) honors were Wen Stafford, St. Elizabeth, Oahu Council; Elsie Pasol, Kauai Council; and Adriano Vicente, Hawaii Council.
Bishop Larry Silva spoke at the convention, stressing the need for evangelization, awareness of domestic conflict in the Filipino families and of families who struggle through two or more jobs.
Appointed as the new DCFCC spiritual director, was Father Peter Dumag, originally from Nueva Segovia, Philippines, who is also the diocesan director of vocations.
The former spiritual director, Father Joven “JoJo” Junio, now assigned in San Bernardino, Calif., was also there.
Convention workshop topics were “violence prevention,” “loving and forgiving,” and “God is Love, Love is God.”
Three resolutions recognized the work of Filipino religious working in Hawaii. Resolution No. 1 commended Maryknoll Sister Rosalinda Barrozo who has worked in Immigrant Services at Catholic Charities since 1974. She is also the associate spiritual director of OCFCC since 1991.
Resolution No. 2 acknowledged Father Junio, the La Salette priest who was DCFCC spiritual director from 2001 to 2008. Resolution No.3 pledged cooperation with Father Dumag as the diocesan director of vocations and the new DCFCC spiritual director.
The Oahu Council will host the 59th DCFCC convention next November, site and date to be announced.
