Aloha to two priests

Bishop Larry Silva greets the congregation at the funeral of Sacred Hearts Fathers Joseph Hendriks and Father Francis Schellemans Nov. 22 at St. Patrick Church in Kaimuki. Father Hendriks died on Nov. 3, Father Schellemans on Nov. 5. Their memorial cards are above. Both priests came to Hawaii from Belgium around 60 years ago. Homilist Father Herman Gomes remarked that the two deaths signal an end of the era when numerous priests from that country, including Father Damien, served in churches across the islands. Three Belgian priests remain in Hawaii.
