In the sidebar to the Oct. 31 special section celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Sisters of St. Francis in Hawaii titled “125 fascinating facts about the Sisters of St. Francis,” Fact # 97 should read: “Sister Elizabeth Gomes, as a 17-year-old Portuguese immigrant, was the first from Hawaii to join the Franciscan Sisters, and accompanied Mother Maryanne Cope on her initial visit to Kalaupapa on Sept. 20, 1888. Sister Elizabeth served for nearly 41 years at Kalaupapa, ultimately as the assistant manager of the Bishop Home for women and girls.”
The story had listed her as a “cook-housekeeper.”
This clarification comes from her family.
