Basic Christian Community celebrating 20th anniversary

The Basic Christian Community of Hawaii (BCCH) will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a day at the beach, at the Ala Moana beach Park’s McCoy Pavilion, Jan. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations are being accepted to help defray the expenses. There will be a special video presentation entitled, “BCCH then and now,” a catered lunch and refreshments, games and prizes, a children’s play area, swimming and more. Holy Name Society pro-life lunch to feature Councilman Gabbard

The Oahu Council of the Diocesan Union of Holy Name Societies will host a pro-life luncheon, Saturday, Jan. 29, at Treetops Restaurant in Manoa to support the Pearl City Pregnancy Problem Center, where unwed mothers find alternatives to abortion.

The luncheon will feature a talk by Honolulu City Councilman Mike Gabbard, a presentation of the society’s annual donation to the Pregnancy Problem Center, a presentation by a Pregnancy Problem Center representative and the installation of this year’s Diocesan Union Officers.

The luncheon check-in begins at 11 a.m., and the buffet meal at 11:30. For a donation of $25, the lunch includes a variety of salads, bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, rice, rolls, fries, eggplant pork, shrimp tempura, two chef specials, cakes, Jell-O, coffee, tea and punch.

Pregnancy Problem Center services include pregnancy testing, counseling, baby clothes, and referrals for housing and adoption.

Attendees are encouraged to buy tickets in advance. For further information, call Joseph Shorba at 595-2076, or Robert Ching at 946-8868. Tickets may also be purchased from Holy Name Society members at St. Patrick Church, the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and Blessed Sacrament Church.

Young Ladies Insitute pizza and bingo night to benefit Red Cross

The District 22 Young Ladies’ Institute “Pizza-Bingo” Fun Nite is Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. Cost is $10 by Jan. 26. The proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross, which is this year’s program of the Young Ladies Institute grand president. For more information, contact Pat at 941-0675.

St. Joseph School, Hilo, annual open house is Feb. 5

In conjunction with Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 31-Feb. 5, St. Joseph School in Hilo will hold its annual open house, 9-11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 5. The elementary and junior-senior high campuses are located on Ululani Street near the Hilo police station. Information on registration, financial aid, academics, athletics and other areas of interest will be discussed. Refreshments will be served.
