Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet celebrate Founders’ Day on Aug. 26 Minimize
Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet celebrate Founders’ Day on Aug. 26

Hawaii’s Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet will host their annual Founders’ Day Celebration, Saturday, Aug. 26, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Hotel.

The luncheon will include a live auction and outright sales. Tickets are $45 per person. Proceeds go toward the congregation’s retirement fund.

This annual event commemorates the establishment of the Carondelet order in Hawaii in 1938 when they were first invited to staff St. Theresa School in Honolulu. Hundreds of St. Joseph Sisters have since served in the islands, primarily in the field of education.

Today, 34 Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are missioned in Hawaii, and 33 lay associates, collectively known as the CSJ Ohana, share their mission and spirituality. The sisters continue to serve the islands through education, social ministry, diocesan administration and a variety of parish ministries.

This year marks both special anniversaries and passings within the congregation and its Ohana.

This year, Sister Jerome Mulligan of St. Theresa School celebrated 75 years in religious life. Sisters Leone Drexler and Roselani Enomoto of Maui both celebrated 50 years

Sister Adele Marie Lemon, a member of the first group of sisters to Hawaii in 1938, died recently at the age of 103. She would have celebrated 85 years as a Sister of St. Joseph in March.

On July 1, long-time friend and Ohana member Adeline Pico of Maui died. She was perhaps the first Ohana member even before the associate group was formally organized, sharing in the congregation’s prayer life and ministry. After retiring, she worked at St. Anthony Grade School in Wailuku as a physical education teacher and after-school supervisor.

For tickets, call Sister Marian Tung at 373-3850.
