The University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va., has named Betty White, head of school at Sacred Hearts Academy in Kaimuki, as its 2008 distinguished alumnus.
White will be recognized May 31 in a ceremony on the campus of the 100-year-old school.
White was selected for her outstanding leadership and contributions in the field of girls’ education. Under her leadership, Sacred Hearts has been selected as a National Service Learning School and was recently one of 10 schools to be named a National School of Character.
White was recognized for offering community symposiums for girls on financial literacy, math, and science and technology, for overseeing the construction of the school’s $10 million dollar performing arts center, and her membership on the National Coalition of Girls Schools Board of Trustees.
Founded in 1908, the University of Mary Washington is named after the mother of George Washington and famed Fredericksburg resident. Its distinguished alumnus award has been presented since 1966 to a graduate for outstanding achievements in civic activities, humanitarian causes, and endeavors in creative arts and sciences.
