Bishop to lead his second Corpus Christi procession from co-cathedral to cathedral Minimize
Bishop to lead his second Corpus Christi procession from co-cathedral to cathedral

By Patrick Downes | Hawaii Catholic Herald

Bishop Larry Silva will celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi on May 25 with a Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa followed by a procession to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace.

The 10:30 a.m. Mass will conclude with 15 minutes of silent adoration before the mile-and-a-quarter march begins. At the cathedral destination, the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will continue with Evening Prayer and Benediction.

This is the second year that the bishop will lead the procession from the church in Kalihi-Palama to the downtown cathedral. The eucharistic procession is a tradition for the feast that is also called Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

Last year, 230 people joined the hour-long trek up School Street, down Nuuanu Avenue, over the H-1 freeway and Vineyard Boulevard, to Beretania Street and the cathedral.

The bishop will take turns with other clergymen carrying the monstrance holding the consecrated host. The Blessed Sacrament will be shielded from the noon-day sun by a hand held canopy.

The walk will be accompanied by prayers and singing.

The city and county will cone off a single lane of roadway for the route where the sidewalks are too narrow and the diocese has secured vans to drive marchers from the cathedral parking lot to the co-cathedral parking lot, and vice versa, before and after the procession.

Participants are advised to bring bottled water. Call Jonila Kim, 203-6727, at the Office of Worship for information, or if you and your group are planning to participate.
