Pope appoints Bishop DiLorenzo as U.S. delegate to Asian synod

Pope John Paul II has appointed Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo as one of two bishops who will represent the United States at the special Synod of Bishops for Asia, April 19-May 14, in Rome.

Bishop DiLorenzo will join bishops from across Asia and the Middle East at the synod, one of a series of regional gatherings the pope is convening in preparation for the year 2000.

The other American bishop is Bishop John Cummings of Oakland, Calif. Both California and Hawaii are states whose populations have large percentages of Asians and Asian-Americans.

The only other American representative will come from the Office of Migration Services from the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
