First deacon class to celebrate with jubilarians

Five permanent deacons who celebrated their 25th anniversary two years ago will be added to the 21 men and women who will be honored at the Jubilee Celebration for Clergy and Religious, a special Mass and reception, March 28, at 7 p.m. in the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu.

The five men are those who remain of an original class of eight ordained by Bishop John J. Scanlan on Dec. 5, 1981, at St. Theresa Church in Honolulu. The class was the diocese’s first.

They are Ronald T.Y. Choo, Andrew J. Gerakas, Thomas H. Miyashiro, Richard J. Port and George W. Thorp Jr.

Of the original eight, William Hughes died in 1987, George Christiansen died in 1997 and Robert Cupp left the diaconate.

The deacons celebrated their 25th anniversary on Dec. 5, 2006, with a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Larry Silva.
