The fish fry, Hawaiian-style
The Lenten fish fry has come to Hawaii. St. Anthony Parish in Kailua’s Family Fellowship ministry hosted the church’s first fish fry on Feb. 15. For $12 for adults and teens and $10 for seniors and children over 5, about 200 parishioners feasted on a meat-free meal of battered or breaded fish with tartar sauce and lemon wedges along with sides of French fries, coleslaw, hush puppies, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, rolls and cake. The idea for the fish fry came from Family Fellowship coordinator Tracy Hoevel’s husband, Bob (above), who grew up in Fort Wayne, Ind., and remembers the fun of going to church fish fries during Lent, a longstanding tradition in many Midwestern states. Helping cook and serve the fish were the Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts, and other parish volunteers. Any profits from the event will go towards Project Makawao, St. Anthony’s capital improvement project.
