Oceanic Time Warner Cable is now offering Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), the 24/7 Catholic network out of Birmingham, Ala., to Hawaii viewers on channel 408 on its digital lineup.
Many Hawaii Catholics have long requested that Oceanic carry EWTN, which according to its website is the largest religious media network in the world. Hawaii residents could receive the channel through satellite TV, but most island cable viewers are Oceanic Time Warner subscribers.
“We have only recently acquired through new technology additional space in our digital spectrum which has allowed us to offer EWTN to our lineup,” said Lonnie Shupp, an Oceanic Time Warner representative, in an e-mail message to the Hawaii Catholic Herald.
Started 26 years ago in Alabama by Mother Angelica, a Poor Clare nun, EWTN now brings Catholic documentaries, talk shows, children’s animation, educational series, and live Masses and church events to more than 123 million homes in 140 countries. It carries 80 percent original programming.
The Oceanic website lists the price for the digital cable service as $56.50, $11 more than the standard service. Digital customers are also required to have a digital cable box which costs about $7.50 per month. Standard service offers 76 channels; digital offers 256.
