Chapel at St. Francis-West to be renamed after saint Minimize
Chapel at St. Francis-West to be renamed after saint

The chapel at St. Francis Medical Center-West in Ewa Beach will be renamed St. Francis of Assisi Chapel during a 10 a.m. Mass on Oct. 4, the feast of St. Francis. Bishop Larry Silva will preside at the liturgy. Robert Mondoy will provide the music.

The Franciscan Sisters will continue to own the chapel after the medical center is sold, most likely before the end of the year.

“The chapel is one way of maintaining a Catholic presence at St. Francis Medical Center-West,” said Sister of St. Francis Sister Agnelle Ching, St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii’s chief executive officer.

“We are pleased to pay tribute to our order’s founder by naming the chapel, St. Francis of Assisi Chapel."

Last month the sisters renamed the chapel at St. Francis Medical Center in Liliha, the Mother Marianne Cope Chapel.

The 1,000-square-foot Ewa chapel, along with its sacristy and spiritual services offices, was recently renovated with new carpet, a paint job and modular office furniture.

The entryway of the 125-person chapel is decorated with a pastel painting by the late Erica Karawina of a joyful St. Francis of Assisi. A life-size monkeypod sculpture by Fred H. Roster of St. Francis with gold leaf bronze halo will be repositioned in the chapel.

After the dedication, Bishop Silva will go to Our Lady of Keaau, a St. Francis Healthcare System retreat center on the Waianae Coast, for a 1 p.m. blessing of the animals, a St. Francis feast day tradition.
