Bishop to speak at March for Life

Bishop Larry Silva will be one of the speakers at the annual March for Life rally that marks the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, 3-6 p.m., Jan. 22, at the Hawaii state capitol building in Honolulu.

Other religious speakers include pastor Rick Irons of Calvary Chapel Central; chaplain Lt. Cdr. David Stroud CHC, USN; pastor Daniel Vargas of Family Life Church of Hawaii; and pastor Mitchell W. Gowen of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Political speakers include Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona; state senators Norman Sakamoto, Sam Slom and Mike Gabbard; and state representatives Michael Magaoay, Lynn Finnegan, Rida Cabanilla, Colleen Rose Meyer, Gene Ward, Tom Brower, Karen Awana, Kymberly Pine and John Mizuno.

Also speaking is Barbara Hester of the Aloha Pregnancy and Pearson Problem Pregnancy Center. Jay Lembeck, director of Hawaii Right to Life will give the closing remarks.

Participants and presenters will gather at the Queen Liliuokalani statue on the makai side of the capitol. The rally includes a march around the capital area.

Members of the Knights of Columbus will lead the pledge of allegiance to the flag and the 1.6 mile march itself. John Keawe and others will provide music.

This annual event corresponds with a large rally in the nation’s capital, and smaller ones in cities across the country. The main target of the rally is legalized abortion, though other life issues, such as euthanasia and physician’s assisted suicide are included.

The Hawaii event is sponsored by Hawaii Right to Life, Hawaii Family Forum and Hawaii Catholic Conference. For more information, call 203-6704, or visit www.catholichawaii.org or www.hawaiifamilyforum.org.
