Dick Pacific golf tourney raises $15,000 for Catholic Charities
Dick Pacific Construction donated $15,000 gained from its charity golf tournament to Catholic Charities Hawaii, the agency announced on Oct. 24. The donation will support programs that help seniors maintain their independence. The construction company has sponsored the Helping the Community Golf Tournament for 10 years. Catholic Charities has been a beneficiary of the event for six years.
Alexander & Baldwin gives $5,000 for St. Francis School gym
The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation on Oct. 21 gave $5,000 to Saint Francis School for its new gymnasium, the Ahuna Troubadome.
Construction for the gym, named after Franciscan Sister Rose Annette Ahuna, began in January. The 7,000-square-foot Sprung Structure will seat 420 and have a scoreboard, new backboards, water coolers, electrical upgrades, lighting and a PA system. A new building in back of the gym will house restrooms with shower areas and the athletic director’s office.
Another new building to the left of the gym will accommodate a weight room and equipment storage. Completing the renovations will be the resurfacing and striping of the original 1960 outside clay practice court.
OHA gives Maili Land transitional housing $100,000 grant
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) has awarded Catholic Charities Hawaii’s Maili Land Transitional Housing Program $100,000 grant to support its operations for one year beginning Jan. 1. Catholic Charities announced the grant on Oct. 17.
For more than 20 years, Maili Land has helped homeless families on the Waianae Coast with children under the age of 19 make the move to permanent housing. In addition to providing temporary living quarters, the 44-unit facility offers education and employment training.
In 2005, the program served 383 people, about 60 percent of whom were of Hawaiian ancestry. During the OHA grant period, Maili Land plans to provide services to 190 residents of Hawaiian ancestry.
